【國立臺灣大學 109學年度畢業典禮 校長致詞】
Opening Remarks, National Taiwan University Commencement 2021
President Dr. Chung-Ming Kuan
.

When the COVID-19 pandemic began last year, NTU was still able to hold graduation ceremonies in person but on a much smaller scale and with the absence of many faculty members, students, and parents. Earlier this year, we were hoping to gather for a traditional commencement. But the sudden outbreak in May had forced Taipei City to raise its epidemic alert level. So we postponed the Commencement and made the decision to hold the ceremony virtually. This is the first virtual Commencement in NTU history.
To our faculty, new graduates, and parents, welcome to the National Taiwan University’s Commencement celebration for the Class of 2021.
As the pandemic unfolds, digital is the new normal. While we gradually adapt to online learning, virtual meetings, social media, online shopping, and food delivery, it is inescapably disappointing for many students and parents to have to celebrate the achievements of our graduates this way after anticipating this event for four years. And because of this, the Office of Student Affairs has teamed up with the graduates to ensure that this unique virtual Commencement is a moment that everyone will remember fondly in the future.
Some of you may ask, "why does this happen just when we are graduation?" And some of you may think optimistically that once the vaccines are available and the pandemic is contained, the world will be back to normal, and that we will all live peacefully.
But the world has never been peaceful. Most of the graduates this year were born in 1999, when the magnitude 7.3 earthquake happened on September 21. Four years after, SARS broke out in Asia, including Taiwan. Within another 5 years, the financial crisis, originated in the United States, affected global economies for years. In 2009, Typhoon Morakot landed and caused severe casualties in Taiwan; the H1N1 flu pandemic took hundreds of thousands of lives. These disasters were, at the time, seen as rare catastrophes that would only take place once every few decades, or even centuries.
Looking back to the past 20 years, we’d notice that, even just in Taiwan, catastrophes have never been in short supply. And they will probably never be in the future either.
Of course, the effect of COVID is far beyond SARS and H1N1, and its impact is greater than the financial crises. What came close was the Spanish flu that took place a century ago (1918-1920), when, according to estimation, one-third of the global population was infected and about 50 million people died.
The influenza pandemic outbreak took place at the end of WWI and hit the German military especially hard. And after the pandemic, Germany was forced to cede its territories to the great powers. What followed was the fall of the Austro-Hungarian and the Ottoman Empires. The series of events reset the international order and formed the settings for many conflicts in the years to come.
While COVID did not break out during a world war, it came at a critical time when great powers bicker and the global supply chains face a reform. The post-pandemic ear is therefore full of uncertainty. I don’t know whether it’d be a "Brave New World"* once the international political and economic orders are reshuffled. But it will be a world we have to live in. There will be many challenges and opportunities, and it will be our new task to utilize what we have learned to tackle challenges and grasp opportunities. Unlike any standardize
d test, you will have to answer and grade the answers yourselves.
I also want to use this opportunity to remind the graduates, that we must have appreciation and gratitude for the healthcare workers who are on the frontlines fighting. Many of them are our faculty members and alums. When the waves of the pandemic hit, they stood up to save lives and protect Taiwan’s society. They are true heroes. As long as we work together, we will weather the crisis and win this battle.
Finally, on behalf of the faculty and management, I send you our deepest best wishes. And congratulations to the parents and families who have supported the graduates for years. I wish you success and good health.
One final thing, I remember reading an article by a foreign writer who said he had lived in Taiwan for years and had noticed that Taiwanese people have a strange habit of saying "be careful" when they part ways. When I read the article, this resonates with me from the heart. For years, my mother would say the same thing whenever I am leaving the house. Now I say the same thing to my children, too. So at this Commencement ceremony, I wish everyone great success in the future, good health, and "be careful."

Which Chinese zodiac sign will have the best 2021? Year of the Ox predictions for love, health, career and wealth
https://www.scmp.com/lifestyle/arts-culture/article/3121172/which-chinese-zodiac-sign-will-have-best-2021-year-ox
• Those born in the year of the tiger and rabbit will prosper this year and Hong Kong’s luck will improve overall, a feng shui expert says
• But those born in the year of the ox, horse, sheep and dog can expect a difficult and challenging year
• Those who feel beaten down by the coronavirus pandemic and economic downturn that plagued the Year of the Rat, take heart.
• Starting on Friday, which marks the first day of the Year of the Ox, Hong Kong’s collective fortune is about to change – for the better.
• According to feng shui expert Yunwenzi, or Master Cloud, the new year will be one of nourishment and healing. However, while the city’s overall luck is expected to improve, what the Year of the Ox has in store for us individually will largely depend on the Chinese zodiac sign we were born under.
• To help you navigate through the coming year, here are some tips on the dos and don’ts from Yunwenzi that promise to help each animal sign find health, love and prosperity.
Ox
For those born in the Year of Ox, take heed. This is also a year in which your zodiac sign is at odds with the guardian god Tai Sui (or Fan Tai Shui), who determines the fortunes and setbacks of mortals.
Oxen will face a number of issues in their career in the coming year. Beware of back-stabbing colleagues or getting into disputes. Focus on your work to avoid unnecessary mistakes at work.
“The ox should beware of the risk of getting fired in the coming year. They’ll lack luck and it may be hard for them to get a new job,” warns Yunwenzi. “It is also difficult for them to accumulate wealth this year as they may make bad investment decisions. They should not invest in projects which they are unfamiliar with.”
Oxen will not enjoy much romance either over the next 12 months; try not to look for partners in clubs or at parties. Illnesses will be a problem too, owing to their weak immune system, so they need to take extra care of themselves.
Tiger
Contrary to those born in the Year of the Ox, the tiger is the luckiest of all the 12 zodiac animals this year. They will encounter plenty of gui ren – helpful people – who will help them realise their plans. Tigers should take advantage of the momentum and explore different possibilities. It will be a good time to start a business.
They are also lucky in love this year. For those seeking a relationship, seize the opportunities and enjoy the many pleasant romantic encounters.
“Widening their social circle not only brings them unexpected rewards but also boosts their overall luck in the year,” Yunwenzi explains.
But she reminds the tigers not to be arrogant and opinionated, as having good fortune does not necessarily mean all their actions are without consequences. For those who frequently attend social events, try not to overeat or else risk suffering from cardiovascular diseases.
Rabbit
The Year of the Ox is good for those born under the Rabbit sign. Everything will be quite rosy and they will be able to bounce back from rock bottom. Filled with positivity and optimism, this is a good year for them to set goals and go in new directions.
However, unlike the tigers, there are not many gui ren around for the rabbits and they pretty much have to rely on themselves to get things done. At work, their effort will be recognised by their superior and there might be a chance of promotion.
Romance is also in the air for the rabbits – but mind that large age gap. Patience and mutual understanding are needed if they want to establish a strong relationship.
The rabbit should avoid strenuous exercise to prevent injuries to the limbs.
Dragon
A stable and average year ahead for those born in the Year of the Dragon: their career will come to a standstill, which will make them doubt their working abilities. Yet, a twist of fate is expected after mid-autumn so it’s worth waiting for the opportunity to present itself.
Although dragons will have many romantic encounters this year, they may still end up unsatisfied as they are not devoting much time to nurture their relationship(s). Their impulsiveness also means they easily fall in love with the wrong person.
The dragon will have a weak lung this year, associated with respiratory diseases. They may also be prone to bad skin.
Snake
It will be a year filled with both fortune and risk for snakes. Since you will be surrounded by people, unexpected opportunities will arise from your growing social network.
“Their rising popularity may also attract people who speak with a ‘forked tongue’. They should work more and talk less. Their hard work will pay off,” says Yunwenzi.
Unmarried snakes will stay single this year because they are too picky. They are advised to lower their requirements when looking for a partner.
Beware of health problems such as spinal disc hernia, frozen shoulder and bony spur.
Horse
This will be a roller coaster year for those born in the Year of the Horse. Their long-awaited plans will be postponed or even halted due to unexpected variables, but as the saying goes, “amid every crisis lies a great opportunity”, and career opportunities will arise during the winter.
They should stay calm and sincerely tackle difficulties faced by their colleagues and company. This will gain their boss’s trust and confidence in them.
Apart from work, sincerity is also key to success in relationships. Just be true to yourself and the right person will be attracted by your charisma. Beware of eye and head problems; headaches and dizziness may occur frequently throughout the year.
Sheep
Those born in the Year of the Sheep should expect a difficult and challenging year. They will face a lot of obstacles in all aspects of life. The Year of the Ox is not one for them to make any important decisions such as starting a business or changing jobs as their mind might be clouded with confusion.
The sheep should stop finding excuses and acting like an otaku. Actively expanding and engaging in their social circles will bring them romantic luck.
“This is a Xing Tai Sui year for sheep, which means that they should also care for their safety as it is foreseen that they may have traffic accidents within the year,” warns Yunwenzi.
Monkey
The monkey foresees a flourishing year full of opportunities and good fortune. They should be receptive to new ideas and seize golden opportunities. They will get help from a female gui ren which will help them get better results.
They will also have a breakthrough in their career. They will easily get approval from their boss and promotion is on the horizon. For those who wish to start their own business, it is a good year to test the water by setting up a low-cost online business.
Monkeys will also have a fruitful social life this year. They will have opportunities to make new friends who have charming personalities. Thanks to the monkey’s attractiveness and social popularity, sparks may fly. It is wise for monkeys to make their intentions clear from the start to avoid ambiguous signals that could damage their reputation and friendships.
Kidney deficiency is likely to emerge in the Year of the Ox. They should also be aware of lower back pain.
Rooster
Roosters will have better fortune this year. This will be a “learning year” for them so they should stop being passive and start actively fighting for opportunities. Although the outcome may be unexpected or unsatisfying, each challenge is a golden learning opportunity.
The rooster also receives blessings from Wen Chang, the god that oversees the intelligence and wisdom of mortals. They should use their time for further studies.
People born under the sign of the rooster will not have much luck in love this year. They may feel tired and lose interest in searching for love. The rooster will not suffer from any major health problems this year, though they are prone to catching minor infections.
Dog
The dog is looking at a troubling year ahead as, like those born in the Year of the Sheep, they will go through a Xing Tai Sui year. It will result in an unstable year filled with trouble and difficulties in relationships. Brace yourselves for the worst during the middle of the year.
Accumulated stress means dogs may lose their temper. Bad fortune will come knocking with all that pent-up negativity.
They will also not have any luck in relationships this year. They should choose their partner wisely and only start a relationship when they have a better understanding of their lover. Dogs should also look after their mental health. Poor stress-induced sleep quality will increase the risk of developing mental illness such as depression.
Pig
Fortune shines on the pigs this year. They are always at their best and are quick-witted. They should attend more social gatherings to broaden their network and develop new job and business opportunities. Pigs could also set a more ambitious goal this year.
Those born in the Year of the Pig may be attracted to a number of people simultaneously, and this could even develop into multiple affairs. The complicated relationships will harm their hopes for romance in the long run.
Their health is hugely improved this year, and there is no major health problem predicted.
Rat
After experiencing a terrible Year of the Rat, those born under this animal zodiac sign will see a boost in their fortunes. But they must be persistent and persevere as their luck will remain average for the first half of the year.
They are advised not to set their goals too high but keep their feet on the ground and be prepared to face any challenges. They will be able to achieve their goals in the second half of 2021.
The rat tends to be indecisive in relationships. They lack security when it comes to love, especially when potential new partners emerge on the horizon. It will make them passive and unable to devote themselves to maintaining the relationship, which will not last.
They have a weak reproductive system this year. A regular check-up is advised.

After Kobe Bryant lost his shooting touch and Shaquille O'Neal was lost to fouls, Robert Horry made sure the Los Angeles Lakers did not lose the game.
Horry scored seven clutch points in the final minute as the Lakers again fought off the Philadelphia 76ers, 96-91, to take a 2-1 lead in the NBA Finals.
The Lakers showed the 76ers a little bit of the toughness that has made them NBA champions. With Bryant struggling and O'Neal on the bench, they had every reason to give in to another frenetic rally by the Sixers.
But Horry would not let them. A member of the Houston Rockets title teams of 1994-95, he scored 12 of his playoff-high 15 points in the fourth quarter and saved his best for last.
"People always say that about me -- that in June, you come out and that's the only time you play," Horry said. "I guess that's either a good thing or a bad thing."
"People who watch this team know it's no surprise," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "That's why he plays fourth quarters for us, is his ability to defend and also make key shots. He was big tonight."
With O'Neal off the floor, Philadelphia went to a funky five-guard lineup and reserve Kevin Ollie's follow shot -- his only basket of the game -- became a three-point play that made it 89-88 with 1:02 remaining.
The Sixers applied pressure and the ball went to the left corner to Horry, who at 6-10 was the tallest player on the court. He drilled the shot for a 92-88 advantage with 47 seconds to go.
"That's a rhythm shot for me, something I practice all the time," Horry said. "I said, 'Hey, I get my feet set, I'm shooting this.' They got a small lineup. I know other guys can got to the boards, get the rebound."
Allen Iverson, who had 35 points, 12 rebounds and finally got back to the free-throw line, was fouled behind the arc and made all three shots to again make it a one-point game. The Sixers again pressured the ball but Horry responded with two free throws with 21 seconds left.
"We decided to try to steal and foul and hope that somebody missed a free throw," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "It didn't happen."
Iverson missed a tough driving layup as he was harassed by Horry and Bryant. A 44 percent free-throw shooter in the postseason, Horry again was fouled and made two more to seal it with 9.5 seconds to play.
"We had a chance to win," said Iverson, who made just 12-of-30 shots but 10-of-13 free throws. "We were right there. ... We kept fighting, got back into the game and we just weren't able to pull it off."
Bryant scored 32 points but made just 3-of-14 shots after halftime. O'Neal added 30 and 12 rebounds but had foul trouble in the second half, exiting with 2:21 to go. But Philadelphia could not overtake Los Angeles and gave back the home court it stole in Game One.
"All we're trying to do is just execute and no matter if the bounces go our way or the call doesn't go our way, we don't try to get down too much," Bryant said. "We try to play through it as much as we possibly can."
"We played through everything," O'Neal said. "We persevered and got a tough Game Three."
Regardless of which team jumps out to an early lead, it does not seem to matter. Each game has come down to the final two minutes and has been decided by a clutch 3-pointer -- the last two by the defending champion Lakers, who have met the challenge this series has become.
"We have players that make critical plays," said Jackson. "We're very pleased with the way we respond to pressure and the way we respond to difficult things. There's no playoffs that doesn't have its critical moments. Most games have them."
"Game One, we made some shots when we needed them down the stretch," Brown said. "Game Two, (Derek) Fisher and (Brian) Shaw made big shots. Tonight, Horry makes them. That's the difference in the series."
Game Four is here Wednesday. The Sixers have now trailed 2-1 in three straight series.
"You don't want to think about going down another game," Iverson said. "You never think that."
Dikembe Mutombo collected 23 points and 12 rebounds and Eric Snow scored 14 points for Philadelphia, which never led in the final 38 minutes.
The Lakers led 73-66 entering the fourth quarter but the whistle seemed to sound in favor of the Sixers thereafter. Iverson took just one free throw in the first three quarters and 12 in the final period. Meanwhile, O'Neal took nine foul shots in the first half and none the rest of the way.
"That changed the game," Brown said. "That allowed us to set our defense and gave us a chance to win."
Horry had a 3-pointer and a slam over Mutombo early in the period. Two free throws by Bryant gave Los Angeles an 82-73 advantage with 7:23 to go.
Iverson made a 3-pointer and O'Neal picked up his fifth foul to start the inevitable late-game push by the Sixers. Iverson's two free throws made it 86-84 with 2:47 left and O'Neal fouled out 26 seconds later trying to plow past Mutombo.
"I didn't think the best defensive player in the game would be flopping like he did," O'Neal said. "That's a shame that the referees buy into that. I wish he'd stand up and play me like a man instead of flopping and crying every time I back him down."
"He fouled out, I thought we had a chance to win the ballgame," Sixers forward Tyrone Hill said.
But Philadelphia could not sustain the momentum. Iverson and Rick Fox traded a free throw apiece and Raja Bell could not handle a pass from Iverson underneath. Bryant made a floater in the lane for an 89-85 lead with 1:17 remaining.
Bryant made 13-of-30 shots and O'Neal hit 11-of-20. The Lakers shot 47 percent (35-of-75) and held the Sixers to 41 percent (33-of-80).
Having jumped from Lower Merion High School here to the NBA five years ago, Bryant was booed the loudest during the pregame introductions. Derisive chants of "Kobe (stinks)!" began in the opening 15 seconds.
The first quarter belonged to O'Neal, who scored 14 points and left his problems at the line in LA, making 6-of-7. Iverson scored 10 and midway through the period thrilled the First Union Center when he beat a diving O'Neal to a loose ball and nimbly skipped over the 330-pound giant with a dribble.
Matt Geiger's jumper beat the buzzer and gave the Sixers a 25-25 tie before Bryant began proving the crowd wrong. With O'Neal taking a rest, he made five straight jumpers to give the Lakers a 40-30 lead, outclassing rookie Raja Bell.
"He got cooking early tonight," Bell admitted. "He started feeling it and once you let somebody with that much talent start feeling it, it's hard to control him."
Both McKie and Snow took turns on Bryant without much success. He spun inside for a layup, then drilled a 20-footer over McKie with 4:02 to go, keeping the lead at double digits.
"My teammates set good picks for me, got me open, I got easy looks at the basket," Bryant said. "It was a matter of knocking them down."
The Lakers led by as many as 13 points before settling for a 55-45 halftime advantage as Bryant and O'Neal combined for 38 points. Los Angeles shot 54 percent (21-of-39).
As he did in the second half of Game One and the first half of Game Two, Iverson did not go to the line. He finally took a technical foul shot in the third quarter, when Bryant cooled considerably and O'Neal had to sit with his fourth foul.
The Sixers clamped down on defense and rode Mutombo's offense to twice get within five points, but Bryant beat the shot clock with a 22-foot jumper late in the period.
